The need for a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Chandigarh becomes evident when compared to the traditional metro system, especially considering the environmental and urban impact. Implementing a metro system in Chandigarh would necessitate the felling of at least 5,000 trees, which would have a devastating effect on the city’s green cover. This deforestation would not only lead to a significant loss of biodiversity but also contribute to increased air pollution and urban heat island effects, thereby worsening the quality of life for the residents.
Furthermore, the metro system, despite its capacity, might not effectively solve the city’s transportation problems. Metro systems are often designed for high-density urban areas and may not be the most efficient solution for a city like Chandigarh, which has a unique layout and moderate population density. The metro’s fixed routes and limited flexibility could lead to inefficiencies and underutilization.
On the other hand, a PRT system offers a more sustainable and flexible alternative. PRT systems consist of small, automated vehicles operating on a network of dedicated guideways. They provide on-demand, point-to-point service, which can significantly reduce waiting times and improve overall transit efficiency. The smaller footprint of PRT infrastructure means significantly fewer trees would need to be axed, preserving the city’s green spaces.
Additionally, PRT systems can be integrated seamlessly into the existing urban landscape of Chandigarh, complementing its distinctive architecture and urban design. This approach aligns with the city’s vision of being a model of urban planning and environmental sustainability. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that neither a PRT system nor a metro system alone would solve the traffic problem; a comprehensive mobility solution that integrates all modes of transportation is essential for effectively addressing the city’s transportation needs.
